The assistance Extra Mile Education Foundation provides takes the form of school subsidies at two schools (St. Benedict the Moor in the Hill District & Sr. Thea Bowman Catholic Academy in Wilkinsburg), as well as scholarship grants to children attending select Catholic schools (Northside Catholic School, East Catholic in Forest Hills and St. Bartholomew in Penn Hills).
Extra Mile’s schools currently serve over 800 children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The student population is predominantly African American and non-Catholic. More than 80% of our children qualify for the free or reduced federal government lunch program and 60% of our students live in single-parent homes.
Despite the difficulties that many students face, 95% of Extra Mile students attend school daily and are on task in the classroom. The parent participation in education conferences in nearly 98%.
