When was Extra Mile formed?
Extra Mile was founded in 1989, in response to community need for a values-based education at the elementary school level.
Who supports Extra Mile?
In response to the stated community need, many Pittsburgh foundations, corporations and businesses, and individuals support the Foundation through gifts, pledges and the contributions of in-kind programs and services.
Why is such a funding organization necessary? Don’t parents pay tuition in the schools?
All parents pay tuition. However, it is not enough. Extra Mile’s financial support enables the schools to charge tuition that is affordable to urban families. Gifts and grants to Extra Mile enable these schools to continue as exceptional resources in urban neighborhoods of Pittsburgh
Where do the children go after attending an Extra Mile–supported school?
Nearly two-thirds of the children attend public school; about 30 per cent attend Catholic high schools. Data shows that 96 per cent of the children successfully complete high school; most of them then go on to college, trade school, or military service.
What does my contribution support?
Your unrestricted contribution supports operation of the schools, including teacher salaries, supplies, and maintenance. Additionally, gifts can be given for restricted programs that provide additional financial assistance as necessary, enrichment programming and building improvements.
Does the Extra Mile Education Foundation accept grant requests?
No, Extra Mile’s granting process does not include a review of requests. All monies are distributed according to a school budgeting process, in response to need and recommendations by the Education Secretariat of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
