The Extra Mile Education Foundation’s 12th annual golf outing, held on June 8th at The Club at Nevillewood, was an outstanding success. A full field of 120 golfers, generous sponsors, the presence of Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin, and the inspiring remarks of St. Benedict the Moor alumna Rashidah McCoy contributed to a great day.
Extra Mile Board Chair Tom O’Brien reminded those in attendance of the value of their support. “In my mind, there is no more important cause than Extra Mile, where children from very difficult circumstances get a great start to their education. And they succeed. More than 96 per cent of the children complete high school in four years, and a large number of those graduates go on to college, trade school, or a career in the military.”
Rashidah McCoy, a St. Benedict the Moor graduate and 2009 Crossroads Scholar graduate of Oakland Catholic, is a recipient of a Gates Millennium Scholarship to support her collegiate education. In her remarks, Rashidah thanked Sr. Margery Kundar, principal of St. Benedict, and her teachers. “There were times when I had to be reminded how important my education is, and how important my efforts must be. I have never forgotten that.”
Mike Tomlin told supporters that he is very pleased to be associated with Extra Mile. “This cause works through education, to make sure that everyone gets a great shot at life. What can be more important than that?”
Board member and event chair Milt Washington thanked the sponsors and players, including lead sponsor Highmark, Inc.
Bob Pompeani of KDKA Sports served as master of ceremonies. |
