The Extra Mile-supported schools have undergone independent evaluations by the School of Education of the University of Pittsburgh since the foundation was created in 1990.
Approximately every four years, a team of evaluators assesses each school’s performance, and makes recommendations for improving instruction. Past evaluations have concluded that parents continue to value the schools for their emphasis on teaching basic skills and values, as well as their nurturing environments and safety. Students believe that they have been given a rigorous, challenging educational experience. Support from the community, including universities, corporations, foundations and community agencies, enhance both the academic and extra-curricular experience.
An evaluation was conducted during the spring semester of the 2006-07 school year. This evaluation investigated and documented 1) ongoing quality of education processes, 2) academic and life skills achievement of present students, 3) post-secondary status of 2001 graduates and why different types of higher education institutions were chosen, and 4) characteristics of Extra Mile education preparation that contribute to success in high school and post-secondary education.
